Prayer - Lesson

“Ask God. Prayer Changes Things.”

  • God is not impressed by the way we pray; He is impressed by a pure and sincere heart.
  • We can use the King’s English or neighborhood jargon
  • The Bible says not to worry about anything, but to pray about everything.
  • Talking to God can be intimidating, but it doesn’t need to be as long as we do it God’s way.
  • God’s word teaches us to pray at all times, in any posture, in any place and for any reason.

Why Should We Pray? Matthew 26: 36-44

1. Jesus was the best example of a praying person. His disciples observed Him praying seriously so often and the profound results He got.

2. They watched Him go off by Himself to pray to His heavenly Father.

3. They saw the power, peace, and confidence that Jesus had in His life, no matter what the circumstances.

4. They were so impressed they asked Jesus how to pray and He taught them the Disciple’s Prayer (Also known as the Lord’s Prayer & The Our Father.

5. Question: If Jesus Christ, God’s Son took time to pray, why wouldn’t we as mere people follow His example and need to do the same?

How Should We Pray? Matthew 6: 5-13

1. We are not to show off or babble on and on to get God to respond.

2. We are to present our requests simply and honestly because God already knows what we need before we ask Him.

3. In Jesus example prayer we see: Honor to God and for His will to be done. He asks to meet daily needs and to forgive sins and to be rescued from the evil one.

4. We do not need to say this same prayer all the time, but to pray in the Spirit of honesty and sincerity.

Volumes have been written about prayer; how to pray, what to pray, when to pray, and where to pray only begins to introduce the vastness of this subject. In this section, we’d like to share a principle and suggest a few guidelines for your developing prayer life.

The principle is: Our highest privilege is to communicate with the True and Living God. Whether you are a young child or a senior citizen, the True and Living God wants a relationship with you. We suggest that when you talk with Him thank Him for what He’s done for you, praise Him for all of His accomplishments in your life and in general, and worship Him because He’s such an awesome God! After all that – then ask Him to help you in the areas of your need.

Here are some guidelines to consider:

1. The heart of prayer is a matter of your heart. You need to be serious, respectful, and fervent in talking to our Heavenly Father.

2. Base your praying on the authority of the Bible promises. God holds us all accountable to know and grow in His Word. He meets us where we are-so start right now!

3. Pray to the Living God (Father) in the name of His Son, Jesus.

4. Act in faith that your prayers will be answered, if they are prayed according to God’s will.

5. Forgiveness opens communication and unforgiveness closes communication. Be forgiving of others, as God is of you.
